Miscegenation

FAMILY. PASSING. RACE.

Vivid, specific detail transforms a memory into a memoir. One way to include detail in your essay is to think about how the five senses figure into your story -- what colors, smells, sounds and textures are most associated with the events. Then, you can use those details as you begin to create the story.

THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCT OF RACE

“Race is a complete illusion, make-believe,” observes a central character in Danzy Senna’s debut novel Caucasia. “It’s a costume. We all wear one.”

"If Othello did not begin as a play about race, then history has made it one"
Ben Okri (Nigerian poet and novelist)

TRAGIC MULLATO

MYTH OF AN ARCHETYPAL MIXED RACE PERSON

The tragic mulatto myth perpetuates the idea that miscegenation or (the mixing of races) is unnatural and harmful to the children produced by such unions. Rather than blame racism for the challenges biracial people face, the tragic mulatto myth holds race-mixing responsible.

DIGITAL PROJECTS

Students have the choice of presenting their findings and conclusions through an essay, a website, or a short documentary film that includes interviews and archival footage. All projects include a DH component: a digital timeline, a digital map, or digital text analyses of primary sources.
